Understanding Philosophy

What is the meaning of life? This is the most common phrase associated with any philosopher. Why is the world the way that it is? Throughout history, there have been a number of great minds exploring the human condition and what it all means. This site provides information about some of these great thinkers, from their views on religion to politics to their contemporary society.

According to Wikipedia, there are eight different branches of philosophy:

Metaphysics deals with the idea of "being" and the elements of the world. It translates to "beyond the physical" and was first explored by the Greek philosopher Aristotle.

Epistemology is the questioning of knowledge. This deals with truth, beliefs and justification.

Ethics, or 'moral philosophy', concerns itself with how one should act in society. The main branches of ethics are meta-ethics (sometimes called "analytic ethics"), normative ethics and applied ethics. Ethics also deals with the issue of morality. Plato's early work deals with the subject of virtue, falling under this category.

Political Philosophy studies the place of the government and the role of a citizen within society. It includes issues of law, property, and the rights and obligations of the citizen.

Aesthetics deals with beauty, art, enjoyment, sensory-emotional values, perception, and matters of taste and sentiment.

Logic is the study of patterns of thinking that lead from true premises to true conclusions. A mathematician in the late 19th century, Frege began a mathematical treatment of logic, and now the subject of logic has been broken into two sectors: mathematical logic (formal symbolic logic) and philosophical logic.

Philosophy of Mind examines the nature of the mind and its relationship to the body, and is typified by disputes between dualism and materialism. In recent years there is an increasing connection between this branch of philosophy and cognitive science

Philosophy of Language is the reasoned inquiry into the nature, origins, and usage of language.

Through this site we will explore these concepts through the famous philosophers that have best represented them throughout history. wilbrulam
